Congratulations on taking the first big step to improve the performance of your existing or new website.  We need the best information you can provide to formulate a plan for optimizing your web and conducting keyword phrase research that will tell us what search phrases are actually being used out of roughly 400 million searches over the past 60 days.  This is where the process starts.  You get to create your VERY OWN top ten list, just like David Letterman!

2.  Describe the marketing strategy of your business.  What do you do, how do you do it?  What marketing tactics do your use?  Which ones work well?  Which ones haven't worked so well.  How do you generate leads?  How do you tell your market(s) about your business?

3.  In rank order of priority to the importance of the success of your business, list the products or services that you provide, a brief 2-10 word description.  Well known brand names are important. Considerations regarding importance:  gross profit, growth potential, unique competitive niche, what you are best known for, what you do best, what you want to do more of.  Use as few or as many spaces as you need.  Leave the others blank.  For nonprofits, enter you key issues or causes in rank order of importance to the success of your efforts.

4.  For each of the items you listed in section 3 above, provide a 2 to 5 word phrase that you might use to search for what you do or want to do on an internet search engine.  Single word phrases won't work unless you are Xerox, IBM or Dell.  Use your imagination!

5.  Who are your major competitors?  Company name, city and state (province or district), country, and the www URL of their web page.  We will look at their webs to get an idea of how they are ranked by search engines, the degree of optimisation of their web, give you information about their web traffic volume and what they are targeting.

For nonprofits, rather than competitors, list complimentary organizations who are supporting or are likely to support your efforts.  We will use these organizations for a cross linking strategy!

6.  What is the geographic scope of your market?

Check all that apply:  International    National    Regional    Local

Clarify your markets checked above.  What we are looking for are countries, states or provinces, city names for your market areas for targeting the geography in your keywords and phrases.  For example, if you are selling widgets in New England, what are the target states you cover in New England in rank order?  We are looking for naming priorities for search engines.

7.  Do you have web stats (statistics) on your current web?

If yes, we would like to receive a copy of your most recent stats or would like to have access to view them online.  Knowing where your web traffic is coming from now will help us to predict what kind of traffic increases are possible from optimisation.  If you don't have detailed web analytics, you need them.  Detailed web stats are essential in monitoring your web performance.  We have them on our web: $5 a month for $1,000 worth of information isn't a bad return on investment?

8 Do you have Microsoft Excel®?

9.  Do you have a budget for your SEO project?

There aren't any tricks here.  This helps us to tell you what we can do that fits your budget or recommend a starting strategy.  We know all about shoestrings, which is why we prefer to go barefoot in the office.

10.  What is the demographic profile of your ideal customer?  More than one profile is OK, type away.  If you don't have a profile, that's OK, we can discuss this over the phone or in person.  Enter any other ideas, comments or questions you have.  Good jokes, fishing stories, will read whatever you type here.  Fishing stories and jokes, we will try to one up you.
